Soccer Field Streams Adopted by Soccer TeamThe PWSI Courage 90 Red boys (under 14) soccer team chose to Adopt-A-Stream at Chinn Park because it is a fun team building activity that provides a community service and a meaningful watershed experience for the boys. Adopt-A-Stream provides an opportunity for kids to be outdoors, have fun, and learning how their activities (and others') fit into the total environmental picture. Your next question may be, "What is a watershed?" A watershed is the land area which the water, running downhill, flows across to a local water body and/or storm drain on its way to the Potomac River. In Prince William County, we live in the Potomac River Watershed and also in the larger Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Why Chinn Park? The PWSI Chinn Soccer fields are the Courage 90 Red's home soccer fields, so the location is near and dear to their hearts. The location is convenient, easy to clean up, and had not yet been adopted. The group met at the end of soccer practice, put on their gloves and vests, and listedned to a short safety training session given by adults who watched over them during the cleanup. Then off they went. They worked together for two hours to remove over 600 pounds of litter from the streams behind the soccer fields. It was a great afternoon with friends, and a satisfying team-building effort they won't soon forget. The team will receive a metal sign to put up at the soccer fields recognizing their group in the state-wide Adopt-A-Stream program. |
