Thank you for your interest in starting a new Adopt-A-Stream group. We will assist you in forming a successful program for your community.
How Do I Get Started?
Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District can help individuals or groups find a stream or you can select a stream on your property.
To start your own group you must be at least 18 years of age and you must complete the following steps.
Step 1: Please read the General Conditions and Safety Guidelines and agree to comply with them.
Step 2: Choose a stream to clean. You may clean a stream on your property or on public property. If you choose a stream on public property, please contact Adopt-A-Stream Coordinator to check if the stream is available for adoption. You may be able to choose a stream on private property if you are able to get written permission from the owners. Please have the property owners complete the Permission to Enter Private Property Form.
Step 3: Once you have chosen a stream and cleared it through the AAS Coordinator submit the Application for Designation and Agreement Form.
Step 4: Choose a date for your cleanup and order supplies by submitting the Cleanup Event Form.
Step 5: Contact the Adopt-A-Stream Coordinator to arrange to get your supplies from the District office.
Step 6: Make copies of the Liability Release and Sign-in Sheet for the volunteers to sign at the cleanup.
**VERY IMPORTANT**Each volunteer (including you) must sign a Liability Release form and the Sign-in Sheet and have a briefing on, or read, the Safety Guidelines before participating in the stream cleanup.
Step 7: Clean the stream - finally! Please note the number of bags of trash and tires, types of trash and anything unusual that was collected. If you did not arrange for trash pickup (on the Cleanup Event Form submitted in Step 1) please properly dispose of the trash on your own.
Step 8: Complete and submit the Cleanup Data Form.
Step 9: **VERY IMPORTANT** Please mail all Liability Release Forms and Sign-in Sheet(s) to: Virginia Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR), Adopt-A-Stream Coordinator, 203 Governor Street, Room 406, Richmond, VA 23219.
Step 10: If you would like to have photos of your cleanup posted on this web site, please send them to kellyjimenez@pwswcd.org or mail to 13061 Fitzwater Drive, Nokesville, VA 20181.
Step 11: Know that we REALLY appreciate your help in cleaning up our waterways!
